Wastewater a source of electricity

Due to the high rate of industrialization and urbanization, there is a significant high demand for electricity across the global. Yet at the same time there is much wastewater being generated and discharged into the environment which in turn causes environment pollution. The contaminants in wastewater have the potential of contributing to electricity generation. A Bioelectric cell has been developed in which wastewater can serve as a raw material for electricity generation subsequently rending wastewater safe for reuse.

STATUS: On-going

Center for Analytical Protocols (CAP)

CAP will present a compendium of protocols optimized by leading scientists and quality control professionals for life sciences, environmental monitoring and analytical chemistry. By a simple click, one will be able to get access to a standardized protocol to run an experiment smoothly with a guidance of a respective tutorial. One will be able to upload a protocol which through a consortium sitting after a period of time will always converge to revise the uploaded protocols and update the existing ones.

STATUS: Proposal

Avocado value addition

Avocados are among the most nutritious foods yet with a short shelf life. As a way of increasing accessibility for their nutrients which are essential in prevention of chronic malnutrition, research has been carried out towards developing a novel avocado product which has a long shelf life.

STATUS: Completed

Biodegradable plastic bags

Almost all aspects of everyday life involve the use of plastic bags. These after use, when disposed, they are non-degradable. This results into environment contamination and pollution which has impact on climate (when burnt), on health and life (when consumed by animals). A prototype of a biodegradable plastic bag has been developed which after use on disposal can degrade by biological means. These are developed using renewable raw materials such as agriculture wastes like cassava.

STATUS: Completed

Development of a saliva based diagnostic tool for obesity

Obesity is one of the most visible yet most neglected public health problem among the people. It is a risk factor for pathogenicity of several diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases. Like any other health problem, its effective management depends on effective diagnosis. Therefore, our research aims at development of a non-invasive diagnostic tool using saliva.

STATUS: Proposal

Genetic Engineered Bacteria as a Biocontrol for Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is one of the major public health threat rendering treatments against bacterial infections less effective. AR occurs when bacteria develop mechanisms to evade antibiotics effect. During this study, non-pathogenic bacteria will be genetically engineered to carry genes that inhibit heat shock proteins (HSPs) synthesis. The engineered bacteria will detect the antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water sources in which they are introduced. They will transfer genes coding for HSPs inhibition to the resistant bacteria by conjugation. This will in turn increase the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics.

Isaac Byarugaba

Managing Researcher

Isaac Byarugaba is a Biotechnologist by qualification & practice with passion in R & D towards solving challenges in the everyday life. BI BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH LABS started as BI BIOTECH SERVICES LTD during the Climate Launchpad program of 2021.

From the inspiration by the contribution of Hans Krebs to the world of biology and the motivation during the climate Launchpad and the Canada Africa Innovation fellowship in 2021, BI BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH LABS was started. It provides a platform through which research and development will be carried out to provide scalable and sustainable solutions to the world's challenges.

Isaac holds a MSc. Biochemistry, & BSc. Biotechnology of Makerere University, Uganda. To diversify his knowledge base, he has also attained a Certificate in Industrial Biotechnology of University of Manchester, Certificate in Methods of Molecular Biology of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and a Certificate in Introduction to Forensic Science of Nanyang Technological University.
